On the last day of the EHF EURO 2022, Denmark faced France in the battle for the bronze medal and wanted to avoid leaving the competition with three consecutive defeats.
The Danish team led by Nicolaj Jacobsen would be missing one of the best players ever, Mikkel Hansen, while France was reinforced by Kentin Mahé, who had been absent in the last games due to testing positive.
In a shaky start for the Danish team, France took advantage and took a four-goal lead after 13 minutes, where Denmark had just lost their star player Mathias Gidsel to injury early on. Denmark managed to tie the game in the 28th minute, but two minutes to forget, with two turnovers, dictated that France reached the interval with a two-goal lead.
In a first half where it was evident the weaknesses of the Danish positional attack against an extremely aggressive French defense, where they could only manage seven goals in twenty attacks, explained by the shooting efficiency of 48% and by the ten saves of the French goalkeeper. In the Danish goal, however, Niklas Landin put in another fine display, making eleven saves in the first half and finishing with an efficiency of 42%. Alongside Niklas Landin, Jacob Holm was the highlight of the Danish attack with his irreverence and was causing France plenty of damage.
The half-time break did Denmark good, as they emerged more disciplined and focused and managed to erode their advantage and take a two-goal lead after 10 minutes. However, ten minutes of chaos and France were back in front, coupled with a shutout and two turnovers. Denmark rallied the troops and started a great comeback in the last ten minutes of the game, reaching the end of the 60 minutes with a 29-goal draw.
This was followed by an extra time where only Denmark could score, proving that in the first half Denmark had a 100% attacking effectiveness and, by half time they were already leading by a margin of two goals, which in the end would confirm the bronze medal for Denmark.
In statistical terms, Denmark showed improvements in positional attack, finishing with an efficiency of 49% while obtaining a shooting efficiency of 59%. In addition, Niklas Landin had an excellent match, finishing with nineteen saves from fifty-two shots, thus ending the match with an efficiency of 37%. At the end of the match, Denmark was superior in all statistical variables, winning the match, even with the absence of Mikkel Hansen and the injury to Mathias Gidsel.
Niklas Landin – ♥♥♥♥♥
What a magical night for Niklas Landin, who would finish the game with nineteen saves and 37% effectiveness.
Magnus Saugstrup – ♥♥♥♥♥
Another beautiful game from Saugstrup, an excellent defensive performance combined with a good offensive performance, where he would finish the game with three goals. It should be noted that the Danish line player’s three goals were scored consecutively as Denmark started a great recovery in the second half of the game.
Jacob Holm – ♥♥♥♥
In the absence of Mikkel Hansen and the early injury to Mathias Gidsel, he was the star who shone most brightly in Denmark’s attacking processes with ten goals from thirteen shots and one assist, causing immense difficulties for the French defense.
Henrik Møllgaard – ♥♥♥♥
Probably the best game from the Danish defensive specialist, cohesive and fundamental in Denmark’s central axis with a steal and a block.
Simon Hald – ♥♥♥
Wasn’t perfect at all levels, but had a good game with two goals, sinning with two technical faults, and the 7 meters committed.
Rasmus Lauge Schmidt – ♥♥♥
Was important in the last minutes and overtime with his experience, finishing the game with four goals and an assist
Niclas Kirkeløkke – ♥♥♥
A tricky game for the Danish Right-Back who replaced Mathias Gidsel, where he did not have an easy task, finishing the game with five goals on twelve shots and five assists.
Lasse Svan – ♥♥♥
Another reasonable game from the experienced wing with three goals and three assists
Aaron Mensing – ♥♥♥
Despite not playing a great game, came up very well in the extra time
Mads Mensah – ♥♥♥
Had a lot of difficulties defensively, but offensively was at a good level with two goals and two assists.
Magnus Landin – ♥♥♥
A good game from the Danish left winger with two goals in three chances.
Emil Jacobsen – ♥♥
Was not particularly happy in today’s game.
Johan Hansen – ♥♥
Played for 20 minutes and was very unobtrusive.
Kevin Møller – NaN
Came in only to defend a 7 meter with no success.
Lasse Andersson – NaN
Played only for a few seconds.
Mathias Gidsel – NaN
An early-game injury ruled Mathias Gidsel out of the game in the very first two minutes of the game.
