Denmark started with their usual seven and with their regular defensive system, aggressive and causing a lot of difficulties to the offensive organization led by the Croatian Luka Cindric. In the first five minutes of the match, Croatia would commit three turnovers and only one goal. However, Croatia had a good level of defensive recovery and did not give space to Denmark to take advantage of offensive transitions. This way, Denmark invested in their organized offensive process with long attacks, where each ball possession had an average of 38 seconds, against a highly aggressive 6:0 from Croatia.

However, Denmark soon started leading the scoreboard with a two-goal advantage, taking advantage of Croatia’s two exclusions in the first 10 minutes of the game. From this moment, Niklas Landin was in evidence in the first half with nine saves in twenty Croatian shots, reaching an efficiency of 45% until halftime.

In the first half, the defenses outplayed the attacks, where Niklas Landin and Mirko Alilovic shone in the goal, and both teams reached halftime with an offensive efficiency of 55% and 50%. It is essential to mention that, in the Danish attack, Emil Jakobsen had a great first half with five goals from five left-wing shots and, in the Croatian attack, Tin Lucin started to give a lot of trouble along with Luka Cindric.

In statistical terms, in the first half, the difference in the result was justified by the tremendous display of Niklas Landin with nine saves.

In the second half, the great novelty in the Danish offensive game was the application of the 7:6 throughout the second half to make up for the difficulties they felt offensively to overcome Croatia. While Croatia, characterized by their delivery and grit, never threw in the towel, beating a team with Niklas Landim, Mathias Gidsel, and Mikkel Hansen in its roster is not enough.

With more or less difficulty, Denmark was managing to significantly improve their shooting efficiency and, consequently, their attacking efficiency, although they didn’t have the desired success in the offensive transitions. It is important to point out that, in the key moments, Mikkel Hansen and company would solve the problems, and the proof of that is in the attacks in passive play.

At the end of the match, Denmark won 27:25 against Croatia, in a different game than usual between these two teams, and I think it was a game where both teams privileged the offensive organization, giving up a faster game. It’s possible to verify that with the ball possession and average time per attack. Another interesting aspect was Denmark’s bet on 7:6, which solved some offensive difficulties despite only being successful in 59%. However, in statistical terms, the most predominant factor comparing the attacks of both teams was the effectiveness of Niklas Landin.

At the end of the match, Mikkel Hansen, with eight goals from eleven shots, was named Man of the Match.

Denmark is very close to conquering a place in the semi-final, after the slip-up of France against Iceland and each day that passes is more and more a candidate and favorite to win the gold medal in this EHF EURO 2022.

Mikkel Hansen – ♥♥♥♥♥

Who has in his team Mikkel Hansen can solve any complicated situation whenever needed and beat any team.

Niklas Landin – ♥♥♥♥♥

A phenomenal first half with nine saves and a second-half showing up in the decisive moments.

Mathias Gidsel – ♥♥♥♥

Who will stop this fantastic youngster? It’s a question I ask game after game. He didn’t have it as easy as in other games, but his connection with Hansen and Rasmus Lauge is incredible. They play practically with their eyes closed.

Emil Jacobsen – ♥♥♥♥

What a great game from Jacobsen with 100 % effectiveness from the left-wing. He only sinned on the two missed shots in a quick, first-line transition.

Magnus Saugstrup – ♥♥♥♥

Saugstrup had a lot of work with Cindric and Marino Maric but is a key piece in the Danish game. He is an understated but essential player in the defensive process, and offensively he was at a good level, finishing with 100% effectiveness.

Lasse Svan – ♥♥♥

True, he didn’t have a memorable game, but he was the only right-wing player who had few opportunities to finish. However, he performed in all game phases and was at a good level.
